LTNY was very well attended and served as a great exhibit to officially launch our latest iPad app for attorneys – TranscriptPad. It was an exciting three days of non-stop demos of both TranscriptPad and TrialPad.

We’d like to thank everyone who met with us, stopped by for a demo, and provided useful feedback regarding our apps. As one of the most niche conferences out there – Mac lovin’ attorneys – it definitely did not disappoint!

Ian O’Flaherty, developer of TrialPad, and I attended the three day conference. It was a great experience where we got to see tech-savvy lawyers we had met at prior conferences, meet new Apple-enthused lawyers, give demos of TrialPad 2.1.4, and answer an array of questions from existing and future users. Since we had just launched the newest version, 2.1.4, it was very interesting to see everyone’s reactions. While most people were familiar with the basic annotation tools – highlight, pen, redact – the tools that got the most “ooo’s” and “ahhh’s” were the laser tool, multiple (and smoother) callouts, and video play. Not to mention the brand new features of wireless presentation and War Room Mode. Everyone went ecstatic about using a tiny Apple TV to enable wireless courtroom presentation. Gone are the days of being connected by VGA cables. For the non-trial attorneys, the new War Room Mode, along with an enhanced file management system, were quite attractive for depositions and mediations.

#MILOfest was a very concentrated, fun, and informative conference! I enjoyed finally meeting all those tweeps I have been tweeting with for nearly the past year, and was very impressed by the camaraderie among all the attendees. Victor Medina, MILOfest organizer, as well as all the speakers – Finis Price, Randy Juip, Brett Burney, Ben Stevens, David Satterfield, Jack Newton, Mark Metzger, Mark Merenda, Larry Port, and John Callis – deserve a huge round of applause for their great presentations and making MILOfest such a success!

If you have an iPad 2 with iOS 5 and Apple TV running the latest software, you will be able to take advantage of AirPlay Mirroring. This will allow you to present without being physically connected to a projector or screen, giving you mobility in the courtroom like never before.

Requirements:

TrialPad 2.0.35

iPad 2 with iOS 5

AppleTV (2nd Generation) with Software Update 4.4 [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4448]

(Note: Your iPad and AppleTV device have to be on the same WiFi network.)

TrialPad only mirrors the presentation screen, i.e. the part you want your audience to see, and not your file structure. Neat!

We’re excited to announce that next month, we’ll be attending another one!

On November 10th, Ian O’Flaherty, TrialPad developer, and I will travel to Walt Disney World for what’s said to be “the best Mac-lovin’ lawyers event” – MILOfest. This 2 1/2 day conference hosted by New Jersey estate planning attorney, Victor Medina, will focus on Apple technology such as the iPad, iPhone, Macs, etc, for lawyers and their practice. The seminars will feature some of the country’s most tech-savvy legal professionals in the industry including Ben Stevens, Brett Burney, Finis Price, Mark Metzger, Randy Juip, Victor Medina and more! This conference will share tips and tricks, highlight the best apps, and help streamline your practice with Apple’s latest technology. You can learn about all the sessions by clicking here. And, of course, there will be ample opportunity to get a first-hand look at TrialPad as we’ll be demoing right outside the conference room. Don’t forget to bring your iPad, curiosity and questions for us!

I’m especially excited for this event because I’ll finally get to physically meet all the legal tweeps I’ve been twittering with back and forth since December. It’s extraordinary how I’m familiar with everyone’s faces, twitter handles, names and interests without having actually met them in-person yet – all thanks to Twitter!

So if you’re a “Mac-lovin’ lawyer” or perhaps you’re curious to find out if you should make the switch to Apple, I encourage you to join us and register for this informative and fun event.

Benefits of backing up: Restore your apps including TrialPad and saved Hot Docs with their annotations Ability to sync content … [more...]

Are you backing up your iPad? If you’re not backing up each time you connect to iTunes, you should start!

Benefits of backing up:

Restore your apps including TrialPad and saved Hot Docs with their annotations

Ability to sync content from your iPad to your computer

Restore your information and data

Ability to encrypt backup information

How to backup:

If you lost your iPad and purchased a new one, plug this new iPad into the same computer that was used for the backup

Click Restore from Backup which will restore all your TrialPad data (including Hot Docs and their annotations) even if TrialPad has not yet been re-installed

Re-install TrialPad on your new iPad by 1) syncing from iTunes or 2) from the App Store

When TrialPad is launched, all the previous data should reappear in TrialPad.

Note: iOS 5 gives you the option to back up to iCloud. This works the same, but it is all done without iTunes. When you get your new iPad up and running on iOS 5, it will ask you to sign into, or create a new iCloud account, then ask if you want to restore from any backups that are saved to that account.

For more information about backing up your iPad, click here.

The answer: you bet, and a significant one at that!

In April 2011, James (Jamie) Moncus III and Matthew Minner, two trial lawyers at Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton in Birmingham, Alabama, received a favorable $37.5 million verdict using an iPad and TrialPad.

While these two litigators would normally choose either TrialDirector or foam boards for presenting their evidence, they decided to display their 45 key trial exhibits using a more unconventional approach – the iPad. Why?

Here’s the short version of what Jamie Moncus told Monica Bay, Law Technology News’ editor-in-chief, in a recent interview:

Independence and intimacy of presenting the case themselves

Ease of highlighting, resizing, zooming and annotating using the iPad’s pinch and zoom touch screen

Mobility of connecting a long VGA cord and adapter to a projector screen allowing free movement around the courtroom

iPad’s 10-hour battery life

TrialPad’s Hot Docs

Document management system

Dropbox

I encourage you to learn more about this $37.5 million win by reading the entire Law Technology News article, Gambling On New Trial Technology, and listening to the podcast interview with Jamie Moncus and Monica Bay, Apple in the Courtroom: Using an iPad to Persuade Jurors in a High-Profile Trial.
