If you attended LegalTech New York 2012 (LTNY), one of the industry’s leading legal technology conferences in the country, we hope you stopped by our booth and met with Tara, Wolf, and me.

LTNY was very well attended and served as a great exhibit to officially launch our latest iPad app for attorneys – TranscriptPad. It was an exciting three days of non-stop demos of both TranscriptPad and TrialPad.

We’d like to thank everyone who met with us, stopped by for a demo, and provided useful feedback regarding our apps. We were happy to see and meet Neil Squillante of TechnoLawyer, Tanesha Readom from ALI ABA, Brett Burney of Macs in Law, Evan Koblentz from LTN, as well as our frequent Twitterers Julie Tolek, Andrea Cannavina, and Gwynne Monahan (just to name a few). And if you couldn’t find our booth, we apologize as we were mistakenly omitted from the directory.

Ian O’Flaherty, developer of TrialPad, and I attended the three day conference. It was a great experience where we got to see tech-savvy lawyers we had met at prior conferences, meet new Apple-enthused lawyers, give demos of TrialPad 2.1.4, and answer an array of questions from existing and future users. Since we had just launched the newest version, 2.1.4, it was very interesting to see everyone’s reactions. While most people were familiar with the basic annotation tools – highlight, pen, redact – the tools that got the most “ooo’s” and “ahhh’s” were the laser tool, multiple (and smoother) callouts, and video play. Not to mention the brand new features of wireless presentation and War Room Mode. Everyone went ecstatic about using a tiny Apple TV to enable wireless courtroom presentation. Gone are the days of being connected by VGA cables. For the non-trial attorneys, the new War Room Mode, along with an enhanced file management system, were quite attractive for depositions and mediations.

#MILOfest was a very concentrated, fun, and informative conference! I enjoyed finally meeting all those tweeps I have been tweeting with for nearly the past year, and was very impressed by the camaraderie among all the attendees. Victor Medina, MILOfest organizer, as well as all the speakers – Finis Price, Randy Juip, Brett Burney, Ben Stevens, David Satterfield, Jack Newton, Mark Metzger, Mark Merenda, Larry Port, and John Callis – deserve a huge round of applause for their great presentations and making MILOfest such a success!

TrialPad only mirrors the presentation screen, i.e. the part you want your audience to see, and not your file structure. Neat!

Some users who have upgraded their iPad to iOS 5, including myself, have experienced an issue where none of the non-default apps (those other than Calendar, App Store, etc.) would open.

The solution:

1. Download any app from the App Store (a free app will work)
2. Type in your password and all the non-default apps will work again

TrialPad 2.0.35 update:

• Addressed an issue with files not importing correctly from iTunes
• Addressed an issue with emailing, printing, Dropboxing documents would cause app to close
• Added a feature to remember your preferred display resolution
• Disabled resolutions below 1024×768
• Addressed an issue with clearing annotations after changing resolutions
• Addressed an issue with zoom and pan positions after resuming from Freeze/Blank
• Re-enabled portrait mode throughout the app, while not presenting (just for Jim!)
• Addressed an issue where duplicating a case would cause the duplicate not to save
• Addressed an issue where duplicating the Welcome case would not retain the proper folder names
• Addressed an issue with large image files causing crashes (any problem image files will need to be re-imported)
• Addressed a crash when using the rotate button on a video
• Addressed an issue where files with uppercase, or mixed case extensions were being omitted in Dropbox imports
• Addressed several issues with annotations getting out of sync with the external display
• Addressed an issue where the back button in the Video or Hot Docs tab would take you back to the Documents tab

Benefits of backing up:

• Restore your apps including TrialPad and saved Hot Docs with their annotations
• Ability to sync content from your iPad to your computer
• Restore your information and data
• Ability to encrypt backup information

How to backup:

1. If you lost your iPad and purchased a new one, plug this new iPad into the same computer that was used for the backup
2. Click Restore from Backup which will restore all your TrialPad data (including Hot Docs and their annotations) even if TrialPad has not yet been re-installed
3. Re-install TrialPad on your new iPad by 1) syncing from iTunes or 2) from the App Store

When TrialPad is launched, all the previous data should reappear in TrialPad.

Note: iOS 5 gives you the option to back up to iCloud. This works the same, but it is all done without iTunes. When you get your new iPad up and running on iOS 5, it will ask you to sign into, or create a new iCloud account, then ask if you want to restore from any backups that are saved to that account.

In April 2011, James (Jamie) Moncus III and Matthew Minner, two trial lawyers at Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton in Birmingham, Alabama, received a favorable $37.5 million verdict using an iPad and TrialPad.

While these two litigators would normally choose either TrialDirector or foam boards for presenting their evidence, they decided to display their 45 key trial exhibits using a more unconventional approach – the iPad. Why?
